I love how dresses and springtime go hand-in-hand! When I put on my first spring dress, I feel uplifted by the colour, print and style, let alone the sensational feeling of bare legs!

We can start to have some fun with our wardrobes again because each dress seems to have a character of it's own. A dress can say more about your style than any other garment and with no more effort than adding a necklace or choosing what shoes to wear. Really, can you have too many dresses? Even one from a few years ago can be brought back to life with the right personality.

Dresses are more than just a pick-me-up—they’re practical too.

Start building your spring wardrobe with a Plum dress--especially while the coupon still in effect. Save $20 off $95 purchase until March 23rd. Then refer your friends for a chance to win a $200 gift certificate! Details here.

Not just reserved for household chores, distressed denim has been reclaimed. New moms rejoice! These jeans are your uniform. What was once considered sloppy, tattered and torn jeans are easy to style, easy to dress up whatever your lifestyle.

For those marathon errand runs, layer a shirt over a tank and roll your cuffs over your converse or sandals. In your large tote, bring along an extra t-shirt for any accidental spills, but relax about your jeans because smudges just blend in!

When you get to relish in a coffee date, half-tuck your blouse into your jeans and cuff your jeans to draw attention to your heels. Remember, the less you fret over the details, the more stylish they'll be.

How do you wear distressed denim?

For Spring 2014, the black and white trend is bold and never boring. Not only can you incorporate your wardrobe basics, but you can build off them by adding prints and colours as the season progresses. Here are three different ways to wear this trend this spring:

Image

1. Go from Head to Toe

Wearing black and white from head to toe looks sharp. If you want a monochromatic look, differentiate between garments by playing with textures. Or, add one piece in the contrasting colour to create some visual interest.

2. Add a Pop of Colour

Whether it’s your shoes or your cardi, adding a brightly hued item will change the whole look. Not only will your outfit highlight the bright colour, but it makes the black and white combo more defined.

3. Play with Prints

This season, stripes and polka dots can be mixed and matched for a playful look full of personality. Whatever your comfort level, playing with prints is easy when mixing patterns in black and white.

We got lots of black and white styles in stores for spring.  How do you plan on wearing this trend?

3 Tips to Transition to Spring

While it’s too early to wear spring fashion from head to toe, we can’t help but want to put on something lighter and brighter. With the official start of the season over a month away, here are three tips on how to start transitioning your wardrobe over to spring:

Image

  1. Brighter Colours: Start by incorporating more vivid colours into your outfits. Here we paired the Plum Kimono Cardigan with some dark denim for a pop of colour. For later in spring, we paired it with some white boyfriend jeans to brighten it up.
  2. Lighter Layers: Lighten up your layers with some spring fabrics. To wear the Kimono  now, we layered it over a thick cotton top but you could even layer it over a longer sleeve shirt if the weather is cooler.  Later, wear it over a simple ribbed tank like we've shown below.
  3. Updated Accessories:  Update your accessories to satisfy the spring trends you’re coveting. In small doses, we can fully embrace the coming season. Now, we signaled the shift to spring with a fringed pendant necklace. For later in spring, some fine layered charm necklaces complete a breezy look.

Mavi Denim Trends for Spring 2014

There isn’t much in fashion as dependable as denim.  An icon in fashion history, denim is in everyone’s closet for good reason-it’s classic but updates every season.

For Spring 2014, we are moving towards lighter washes and true blue jeans. Distressed, faded, frayed and ripped jeans are highly styled and fun. Even though denim is looking rougher than in seasons past, it doesn’t mean that we are reverting to more casual styles. The look for the season is a hybrid between polished and edgy, sporty and refined. But because denim is always up to your own interpretation of style, how will you be wearing it?

Image

The light wash on Mavi’s cropped denim jacket works well with this season’s shortened, fitted style. It’s the perfect companion over printed rayon dresses.

The Mavi's Samantha jean jacket is available in three different washes: a faded black called Slate $98 (as shown above), Bleach Random $98 (for those craving a lighter wash) and Dark R. Vintage $108 (for a classic dark denim).

Mavi’s denim vest was introduced into our closets last spring/summer, but this year they are set to surge. The denim vest adds some edge when contrasted with short pretty dresses.

We’ve seen the layered look on street style blogs but Mavi’s contrast sleeve denim jacket with detachable hood doesn’t have any awkward bulk.

Mavi's Emma boyfriend jeans aren’t just reserved for casual weekend looks. Style them with heels and a red lip to polish up their rough-and-tumble look.
