"Hello! My name is Rachel and I come from a little nautical-like area known as Steveston Village. I've lived here for practically all my life and it is my favourite spot to this day. The people, little specialty shops, the dock, the water, the beach, the fields - everything about it has a friendly, quaint small-town vibe. It's slowly developing into it's own little Kerrisdale with new boutiques, coffee bars and beauty salons opening up all the time. The thing that captures me the most is that every store, person and little dog here sincerely lives from the heart. It's hard to explain unless you talk a walk into this friendly little area.
Not only did we love Rachel's obvious passion for her home town, but we're so impressed that she linked her sense of style with her favourite summer spot! Congratulations Rachel and thanks for sharing! We're super inspired to go to Steveston again, especially this Garry Point location. We shot our Spring photo shoot at Steveston - it was freezing but fantastic! A big THANK YOU to every one who entered our Summer Style Contest. We had so many fantastic entries, it was really tough to pick just one! View some of the amazing entries we received HERE. ... read the full post and reader comments May is Big Sisters Month!Submitted by alicia on Tue, 05/17/2011 - 11:49

We don’t think you should buy something just because it is made in Canada. But we do think that all of us should be smarter about what we purchase. With the huge import of cheaply made off-shore goods now available, being smarter means buying locally because it is made carefully and has less of an environmental impact when it is produced close to home. Why would you wear fashion that is cheap and shoddily made when the objective is to look fantastic? We believe that if you choose better you will feel better about what you wear.
We thought it would be informative to show you how Simone dresses are made so you can judge their value for yourself.
The designer (that's me!) hand draws a sketch that is translated into a flat design.
Then the design is turned into a full size pattern. That pattern is digitized, graded, and plotted.
The information and fabric is turned over to the local factories.
A sample is sewn and fitted on a live fit-model trained to give feed back on how the garment ‘feels’ and often a second sample is made as in the case of the dress in our email.
After the final small detailed but important adjustments are made the manufacturing is done in local factories by skilled sewers.
Finally, it goes to our stores where experienced staff will help customers find the perfect garment - for some customers, it will be this Simone Sheath Dress with Zipper Detail ($115) that has just arrived at Plum stores this week.
In 2008, Johanna Ward of Shaw TV's The Express visited Plum and produced this video of our design and manufacturing process. You can watch this video here.
In the comments to this post we would love to know the things you think about when you make a clothing purchase.

"In May 1997, the CURE Foundation inaugurated NATIONAL DENIM DAY, its main fundraiser. This event is held annually on the Tuesday following Mother's Day. Businesses, organizations and institutions across Canada are encouraged to allow employees, members and/or students to wear denim and receive CURE’s ‘pink flower’ ribbon in exchange for a suggested $5 donation. According to statistics from the Canadian Cancer Society, 23,200 new cases of breast cancer in women and 180 new cases in men were diagnosed in 2010. Of these, 5,350 proved to be fatal. Wearing jeans has never been so important!"
From April 28th until May 10th, 2011, Plum will contribute $5 to the Cure Foundation for every pair of jeans we sell. Get involved and don't forget to wear your denim on May 10th! ... read the full post and reader comments Big Sister Annamaija with her Little Sister is Alyssa :) Most of our customers know that Plum has been a Big Sisters sponsor and supporter for many years. As one of Plum’s owners I have been on the Honorary Board of Directors. Every May we do a fundraiser that has a prize draw but today we have a different message. Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland needs your help. Right now, there are an unprecedented 180 girls on the waitlist and we want to match these girls with positive, female mentors as soon as we can. Through their supportive friendship, our volunteer mentors help to enhance the self esteem of girls (ages 7-17) who are facing many uncertainties and pressures as they grow up. Many Little Sisters have difficulty believing in themselves. Your belief in your Little Sister may be the pivotal change that she needs. Volunteer as a Big Sister or Study Buddy tutor! If you are interested in learning more about attending an information evening and shop night at the Granville store please email me at ed@plum.ca and I will be pleased to send you more information.
